Emeritus Professor Kim Oates is Director of Undergraduate Quality and Safety Education at the Clinical Excellence Commission, Sydney, Australia.
He held the Chair of Paediatrics and Child Health at the University of Sydney 1985-1997, was simultaneously Chair of the Division of Medicine at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead and was later the Hospital’s Chief Executive 1997- 2006, a position which strengthened his passion for patient safety.
He has written or edited 15 books and has over 300 publications. He has received a range of international and national awards for research and for advocacy on behalf of children. He is Emeritus Professor at the University of Sydney where he co-leads a program in medical education and research for future health leaders in Vietnam.
At the Clinical Excellence Commission he has been responsible for introducing Patient Safety teaching to five medical schools, three nursing schools and one school of allied health.
He is the founder of the Academy for Emerging leaders in Australia, based on the USA model, where he is a regular faculty member. In 2017, young leaders in pharmacy were amongst the select group of scholars and greatly enriched the program.
